Brief History of the Apostolic Vicariate of Tabuk
The Apostolic Vicariate of Tabuk used to be a part of the Vicariate of Montañosa which was divided in August 6, 1992 into three ecclesiastical Jurisdictions namely, the Apostolic Vicariates of Baguio (now Diocese of Baguio), Bontoc – Lagawe and Tabuk. Bishop Ernesto Salgado was appointed as the Local Ordinary of the Vicariate of Baguio, Bishop Brigido Galasgas was appointed as the Local Ordinary of Bontoc-Lagawe and Bishop Carlito Joaquin Cenzon, CICM Vicar Apostolic of Tabuk in July 6, 1992.
The Apostolic Vicariate of Tabuk is an ecclesiastical jurisdiction in the Philippines covering the Civic provinces of Kalinga and Apayao in Northern Luzon. The CICM Missionaries started their mission in the Cordilleras way back in the 1920’s, although, history tells us that the Dominican Fathers, stationed in Tuao, Cagayan, had a short stint in the territory of Tuga and partly here in Bulanao in the 1689, but settled only in our territory for at least ten years.
In July 10, 2001 Bp. Carlito Cenzon was transferred to the Apostolic Vicar of Baguio; while the Apostolic Vicariate of Tabuk was left under the care of its administrator Rev. Fr. Feliciano Agatep.
Bishop Prudencio Padilla Andaya Jr., CICM, succeeded Bishop Carlito Cenzon. His Episcopal ordination and installation as Apostolic Vicar of Tabuk, took place at St. William’s Cathedral on July 16, 2002. He undertook his formation years at Maryhurst Seminary; St. Louis University (Baguio City) and Maryhill School of Theology before he was ordained on December 8, 1986. He spent 15 years as missionary in Zambia, Africa; 4 years as Novice Master for the CICM Congregation in the Philippines, before his official appointment on April 16, 2003 as Apostolic Vicar of Tabuk.
